I am considered a colorist. In the 1970’s I painted in Washington D.C. where I was influenced by the Color School and specifically by my mentor Gene Davis.
Now I introduce any color into my paintings, presently synthesizing the tropics into my tableaus and themes. The verdant landscapes and ever-present ocean are dominating subjects. The colors of Matisse and his 1905 Fauvist period are an enticement to me to lay down color as I see it in the light and in tropical plants and animals.
The figurative work still finds a home in my work just as experientially nature belongs in Emerson’s Walden Pond. I use pattern just as it is often represented in nature, like repeating itself in the wings of butterflies. One can always find a new way to describe nature’s patterns.
